She worked as assistant director in the movie 131 Hard Labor (1993) and Why the Sea is Laughing (1995) before she directs her first short film The Six O'Clock Train in 1999. Abou-Zekry made her feature debut with the romantic comedy "First Year Con" in 2004, which was followed by other distinct award-winning films including Head and Tailand For Love and Passion (2006) and One-Zero (2009) that was screened in 66th Venice Film Festival.
